Northwest Book Artists and SCBA supporters Chandler O'Leary and Jessica Spring will have their studios open for the tour....among many other fabulous local artists.

Art at Work: Tacoma Arts Month

November 7 & 8, 2009
10 am - 4 pm

39 locations around Tacoma 2009 marks the 8th anniversary of the Art at Work studio tours, featuring 75 artists and collective studios! The tours allow the general public the opportunity to see the spaces in and tools with which local artists create their work. It is also a chance to watch demonstrations, ask artists questions, purchase one-of-a-kind creations and, in some cases, even try your hand at creating your own masterpiece.

The 13th Annual Small Format Art Sale featuring the Museum of Pocket Art in the Front Gallery

Lab Members Preview Reception: Friday, Dec 4, 2009: 5-6pm
Opening Reception: Friday, Dec 4, 2009: 6-9pm
Sale continues: Saturday, December 5 & Sunday, December 6: 1-6pm
Free admission

The Lab celebrates its 25th year, and is pleased to announce the 13th annual Postcard Show. Everyone is invited to contribute a set of small format multiples -- whether that be a series of hand-made paintings or objects, or production run postcards. They're challenging artists to find new, exciting ways to use the postcard theme, and then from December 4 through 6, they'll open their gallery as a cabinet of curiosities, inviting viewers and buyers to experience the richness of the local arts community.

They believe that collecting engaging, high-quality, beautiful artwork should be accessible to everyone.

This year, the Museum of Pocket Art will be exhibiting in the Front Gallery, local DJs will play short sets during the reception on Friday, and on Saturday and Sunday a rotating lineup of local performers will busk for your entertainment.

Fixed-price work will be available for $1 to $50 (cash, checks, VISA or MasterCard accepted).
(50% commission to the artist, 50% to The Lab)

Between the Folds

Think origami is just paper planes and cranes? Meet a determined group of theoretical scientists and fine artists who have abandoned careers and scoffed at graduate degrees to forge new lives as modern-day paper folders. Together they reinterpret the world in paper, creating a wild mix of sensibilities towards art, science, creativity, and meaning.

This fabulous looking documentary will be shown on PBS in December. But we can see it first and free in both Seattle and Tacoma!

Two Fine Chaps

I have begun to follow two new artists Tom Biby and Jonathan Fetter-Vorm, also known as Two Fine Chaps. They have a new book out that you can find at 23 Sandy, a gallery in Portland, Oregon (or online at twofinechaps.com). It's a beautiful accordion style structure illustrating the final chapter of Moby Dick. Talk about epic! The illustration to the right is of The Clockmaker's Joy, a cautionary tale. Check 'em out.
